To: [MP Name], MP for [Constituency]

Subject: Weekend Course Students , Maintenance Loan Crisis , Constituent Request

Dear [MP Name],

I am writing as your constituent to ask for your help with a crisis affecting 22,000 students across England.

In late March 2026, DfE instructed 15 higher education providers to reclassify weekend courses as distance learning. This has resulted in SLC blocking all maintenance loan and grant payments for affected students, including me.

I am a student on [course name] at [provider/campus]. I enrolled in good faith on a course my provider classified as eligible for maintenance support. SLC confirmed and processed my funding. The Secretary of State has stated this is not students' fault.

Despite this, students are now facing direct repayment demands for overpayments. This is not income-contingent debt. It is payable immediately. For students who have been studying for multiple years, the amounts could reach tens of thousands of pounds.

I am asking you to:

  1. Raise this matter with the Secretary of State for Education and ask what action will be taken to protect students from repayment demands for a misclassification they did not cause.

  2. Ask whether the Secretary of State will exercise her discretion under Regulation 119 of the Student Support Regulations to waive recovery from students who enrolled in good faith.

  3. Ask what DfE is doing to ensure providers compensate affected students, as instructed in the DfE letter.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further.

Yours sincerely, [Your Name] [Your Address] [Date]
